Save Our Swanwick

Press Release – for immediate release 21/09/2009

Residents Launch S.O.S

Residents who have launched a desperate S.O.S (Save Our Swanwick) bid to save their village hall from closure will be having a second public meeting to launch an S.O.S public survey.

The survey will be undertaken in and around Old Whittington to ask residents what they would like to see the hall used for and for ways around keeping the hall open.

The second public will take place on Thursday October 1st 2009 in the Swanwick Memorial Hall, Old Whittington starting at 7.00pm.

The evening will start with a talk by local residents explaining the background of the threat to the hall closing. The group will then launch the survey where it is hoped, 3,500 local residents will have their say on the future of the hall.

Chesterfield Borough Council has decided it is no longer going to subsidise Swanwick Memorial Hall, in Old Whittington, which is losing thousands of pounds each year.

A group of residents have joined forces in a bid to save the hall as they fear it will become a haven for anti-social behaviour and vandalism if left to rot.

A spokesman for the campaign group S.O.S said: “The launch of this survey will give every resident within Old Whittington and the surrounding areas an opportunity in shaping the future of the Swanwick Hall”.

“The first public meeting was very well attended and showed the commitment of the residents in wanting to keep the hall open”.

“We want to hear from everyone within the area their views and ideas for the halls future. The hall was given to the people of Old Whittington and their views are important to the shaping of its future”.

Refreshments will be served and those attending will get the chance to ask the group of all the developments that have taken place since the campaign started.

  • Petitions are currently circulating in the area in a bid to save the hall from closing. These will also be available during the open evening.

Note to News Editors

* Save Our Swanwick is a group formed from members of Old Whittington Gala Committee, which regularly utilises the hall for its fundraising activities.
